XP gives way to Windows 7 for DAW systems

It's here; a decent updated WIN DAW platform.  Vista didn't really take, but the Cakewalk technology chief puts it splendidly when he offers his unreserved endorsement of Win7 for Sonar.  Anyways, here's 70 (yes, 70) significant improvements made in Windows 7:

Android!

I've recently joined the Droid club.  I've made an executive decision (?) and this blog can now be about interested non-musical tech stuff too.  I suppose there is a slant there, there's an Android version of Spotify.

Anyway, here's something exciting about a coming feature for those (like me) who use Google Crome a lot, and have an Android phone (i have HTC Desire).

So you can send links straight to your phone.  Pretty neat huh?

First album

Tomorrow is the first recording session of the first "album" i've ever really been involved in.  This blog is really about the technology which i've taken the best part of the decade to build up to get me ready for this day.  I must say, i'm excited about the prospect of where i finally find myself.

After years playing around with "freebee" software, i've finally settled on the following:

(Main Hardware)
Shuttle D'VO with 2.5GHz Intel Quad CPU and 4GB of RAM
M-Audio Firewire 410 (for more portable setups)
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (for larger setups)
M-Audio Keystation Pro 88

(Main Commercial Software)
Windows XP SP3 32bit
Cakewalk Sonar 6 Producer Edition
Native Instruments Komplete 5

(Freeware)
Midi Yoke
Midi Ox

I can say now, with a sense of some relief TBH,  that i'm ready, finally, to make some music.  This immediate project is an album for the RPM challenge (http://www.rpmchallenge.com/) for which "the band" will be recording an album during February 2010.  We have two recording sessions left in which to record the bulk of the material.  We've planning it reasonably well i think, with whole day recording sessions planned the following two Mondays.  We're aiming to use the Pro40 to record live, three instruments and 3 vocals at once (one of the instruments being NI Akoustic piano played live by yours truly).
Then comes the mixing.  I've never really mixed anything, so that's going to be a learning experience.  I think i've a fair idea what to do, but i'm hoping to get a little help from a couple of friends!

After that, I'm aiming to also have a solo album follow on the tails of that.  I've been planning it since i was about 16 (i'm now 34) and i do feel like this year is the year for me finally to get down to business.  Anyway, i'm off to get my midi-Yoke set up!
